Midway along the northern coast of Menjangan Island, the Coral Garden dive site starts with a shallow coral garden with scattered bommies, sloping down to a reef wall. It’s the sort of place where the marine life will surprise you and we saw a large school of bat fish almost as soon as we jumped in the water.
Next was a Titan trigger, one of the few fish which can swim backwards dragging chunks of coral.
The steep sloping wall leading from eight down to 40 metres has soft corals and sponges.
The soft leather corals are all quite small – being still very young. There are lots of very large Gorgonian fans – 2-3m in diameter (and not too deep) and square spot anthias, damsels, convict surgeons, black surgeons, emperor angel and, of course, anemonefish.
A yellow trumpet fish was silently hunting using an Angel as cover.
We came across a sleepy turtle munching on the algae, a blue puffer fish and a few different types of anemone, one with a delicate Peterson cleaner shrimp dancing around in the tentacles.
