Dive area
The waters of East New Britain, with its numerous wrecks and countless reefs, boasts a diverse assortment of fascinating underwater wonders. The countless pristine reefs and historical WWII wrecks with excellent visibility and a large array of pelagic and critters; provide amazing underwater sightings and extraordinary photo opportunities. (Not to mention the added attraction of diving near an active volcano).
Rabaul was the place for wreck diving in PNG before three of the volcanoes which surround the caldera erupted simultaneously in September 1994. In three days the thriving town of Rabaul was completely covered in ash and destroyed.
Life has returned to Rabaul, although there is still plenty of evidence of the devastation caused by the eruptions and the volcanic ash which blanketed the harbour area of town.
The wrecks in the harbour were covered under tons of ash. Today there are again a couple of very good wreck dives and divers have discovered the beautiful reefs around Rabaul as world-class dive spots, both for Macro diving and for the variety of fish life. Kabaira’s reefs have never been affected by the volcano. They have hardly ever been visited by divers and offer some of the most pristine diving opportunities in PNG.
